Christmas knitspiration

Let’s talk about nice and lovely things to knit for Christmas either for yourself, (because why not ?!), or for others. If you do knit for others, just try to make sure they are knitworthy. [Knitworthy = a person or animal that appreciates your handmade creation as in wearing them voluntarily] If you’d still like to knit for others, but there are no knitworthy friends around, find a local charity, where they’d appreciate your knits.

First I’d love to knit the Festive Yoke Pullover by Skeindeer Knits. Her design is a full colorwork sweater intended to knit from sport-weight yarns. This is worked top down and in the round. She used La Bien Aimée Helix in the red/grey sweater. At the moment we don’t carry a Christmassy-red colorway from Helix, but you could try Felix in the colorway RGO instead. I would knit this sweater because, well for one, I love colorwork. Two, I think the motifs she chose are somewhat traditional, yet the sweater looks contemporary, making this a cool design.

Second, the Zwergenaufstand socks would make lovely presents. From the top, they look like ordinary colorwork socks, but at the sole they hide a gnome. Depending on the colorchoice, I suppose the gnome can be a Christmas elf. These cute socks can be knitted from any Fingering-weight sock yarn, like Isager Sock Yarn. There is a lovely red shade (32) that would work great with that white (00) colorway.

Of course there is always the option to knit plain ribbed socks, they knit up fast, especially if you use DK-weight yarn, like in Piia’s free sock pattern. I would probably choose simple grey (1042) or maybe the Christmas Red (4219)  colorway from Perfect to knit a pair.

Another lovely sweater choice would be Holly Sweater by Hanne Rimmen. This is knitted from Lettlopi.  There is also a Holly Cardigan, knitted from Fingering weight yarn.  Neither of these designs look too much like a Christmas sweater and that is why I love them. You could add afterthought bobbles in red to the leaves, making this more Christmassa.  I find I could wear this all year round, such a beautiful design.

My favorite “Christmas” pattern of all is the Mochimochi snowman pattern. I have to admit, I have yet to knit one! Every year I have great intentions to knit tons of these, but I somehow never manage to start. Maybe this year! These would be perfect scrap yarn projects, you could knit up from the tiniest amount of yarn, and would work as tiny decorations on presents.

If you want to knit accessories, knit Ronja Hakalehto’s lovely Muisto Hat and Mittens.  These designs are knitted from Tukuwool DK, you’ll need one skein of Hohka and one skein of Sake.  These two skeins are enough for both hat and mittens.

I’d also knit the super trendy Silk Mohair Beanie by Anna Tanskanen (Anjuknits). This simple Beanie needs 5 skeins of lace-weight silk mohair. I’d go for the original yarn, Isager Silk Mohair, it is so soft! Would love to make one in all the colors of the rainbow, but I’d probably opt for Christmassy black, colorway 30. Check out more color inspiration from this blog post.

And last, some quick knits for Christmas, because there will definitely be a need for those last minute gifts!  Kukkuu Hat from Katia Love Wool knits up in a few hours, or the Tunturi Hat from Fritidsgarn and Tynn Silk Mohair will be done in an evening too.  Both are free patterns!

Happy Christmas knitting!
