Knitted braids are the perfect embellishment for any project to make it just a little more special. Braids are used an embellishment that serves as decoration as well as practical use of preventing curled edges and transitioning between stitch patterns.
In Estonia, there are many different styles of braids that have add interesting details to mittens, gloves, socks, and sweaters. In this workshop, we will learn 5 styles of knitted braids from the Estonian islands of Kihnu and Ruhnu. They vary from a braid cast-on, a 3 colour twisted Ruhnu braid, 2 colour twisted stitch Ruhnu vits braid, Kihnu vits braid and a braided bind-off.
SKILL LEVEL
Intermediate knitter; students should be comfortable to knit and purl in the round, cast-on, bind-off.
MATERIALS NEEDED
US 6 / 4 mm needles for knitting small circumference (DPNs or circular needles for magic loop)
Stitch markers
DK-weight yarn in 3 contrasting colours, approx. 20g of each colour
ALEKS BYRD Aleks Byrd is a knitwear designer with roots in Estonia, Canada, and the USA. Aleks’ passion is creating modern patterns with a connection to the past using little-known traditional techniques for unique wearable designs that are fun and rewarding to knit for all levels of knitters. Her portfolio of designs includes individual patterns as well as those published in The Knitter magazine and Laine Magazine. Her book Traditions Revisited – Modern Estonian Knits brings together her designs and teaching as an introduction to Estonian knitting, both traditional and traditional-inspired. Aleks teaches workshops to demystify the deceptively easy techniques used in her patterns all over the world in the UK, Europe, Canada, the United States and Australia. Most notably with sold out workshops at Vogue Knitting Live in New York. Aleks especially loves sharing traditional knitting techniques from Estonia with knitters around the world to expand their view on what knitting can be. She works with yarn shops and knitting event organizers to bring engaging workshops to your knitting community.
The course order is binding and must be paid for immediately. You can buy tickets from Titityy's online store or in store. When ordering a course ticket, do not order other products. The order confirmation / receipt will be sent by email.
When you arrive at the course location, please register with your name and, if necessary, be prepared to present the order confirmation for the purchased course.
The course will take place if the minimum number of participants is met. If the course is canceled for reasons attributable to Titityy, the course fee will be refunded. The course fee will not be refunded for other reasons, but the course place can be sold/given to someone else, and the other person can participate with the order confirmation. The customer is responsible for reselling/giving the ticket.
