Knit linen blends

Julkaistu: 11.05.2022

Linen and linen blends are fabulous choices for summer knits. Linen breaths next to your skin and improves with each use. Many knitters think that 100 % Linen yarns are rough on hand, but with linen blend, the problem goes away. Sandnes Garn manufactures several great linen blends that are soft and drapey.

Line by Sandnes Garn is a long time favorite, and for good reason. A top knitted from Line on 4 mm needles knits in no time. The so-called little sister of Line, Tynn Line is another favorite. We’d knit lightweight summer tops or shawls from Tynn Line. Tykk Line is the newest addition to the family. It came out in the beginning of spring 2022 and it has been an instant hit! Now there are already 16 fun colors for Tykk Line. All these yarns have the same texture, soft and airy linen-cotton-viscose. Yarns made of plant fibers are excellent choices for summer knits.

Peacock Tee by Lene Holme Samsoe is already a classic. It is designed for Sandnes Garn Line. The pattern and the yarn go together beautifully. I thought that pattern was easy to follow and the DK-weigth Line knit up really fast. As usual, I did not follow the pattern entirely. I added the short rows after the yoke instead of adding them after the neck ribbing and I also knit shorter sleeves. For size 2 I used six skeins in the colorway 1002 white. Lene just released a new pattern for Line, the Palme Tee Solo. How about knitting that too?

Piia is knitting the  Sunday Tee from Tynn Line. It will be used as a sample at the shop, so if you are wondering how Tynn Line looks and feels when knitted up, come and check it out. This is a trendy t-shirt designed by PetiteKnit, knitted from the top down. This is in the colorways 3021 and for an S size you’ll need five skeins.

Milja fell in love with Sandnes Garn’s new yarn Tykk Line. She knit the simple Auguste top from the Tykk Line pattern booklet. This yarn was an instant hit and now it’s getting 8 more awesome colors. Milja used the bright pink 4626 for her top and for size XS that meant five skeins. Think this yarn would be cool for a thick summer sweater too!

Tips for knitting linen blends:

When knitting linen blends or other plant fiber yarn, you should select needles that allow the yarn to run smoothly on them, such as needles made of birch or bamboo. If you try to knit linen blends with needles that are too sharp, the yarn strands might split. Try needles like KnitPro Cubics that are ergonomic and well suited for thin yarn, or maybe select bamboo ones.

Plant fibers are not as elastic as wool, knitting feels a bit different. Do not worry, you do get used to knitting plant based yarn. If you can, switch to wool occasionally and let your hands rest.
