Knit! Lento sweater - Part 2

Julkaistu: 23.01.2023

Onto knitting a sweater

Any sweater, regardless if it’s knitted top-down, bottom up, or sideways, starts with the same words: CAST on xxx amount of stitches. If it matters how the cast on is done, the pattern tells you which one to use.

Pro tip! Try the sweater on as you progress. This way you will know if the sweater will fit or if you’d like to make minor or major alterations to it. You can easily shorten or lengthen the body and sleeves for example, but you wouldn’t know if that needs to be done unless you try it on!

Neckline

In the Lento sweater the cast on is a provisional one, using scrap yarn and a crochet hook. The neckline is folded, hence the provisional cast on. Single crochet more stitches than the pattern calls for. You will be casting on stitches for the neckline into this crocheted chain, to the bump side of the stitches. Later on you’ll unravel the scrap yarn, don’t worry about that.

Generally it is a good idea to go down a needle size or even two for the ribbing. Ribbing is stretchy, so knitting with the same needles as for the rest of the sweater, might make the ribbing look floppy. In the Lento sweater the ribbing is knitted with 4 mm needles and the body with 6 mm needles.

Once you’ve cast on the right amount of stitches, you’ll join to knit in the round. It is a good idea to place a marker here, to mark the beginning of the round. Knit one round and then continue with the ribbing, k1, p1,  as many rounds as the pattern states.

Then you’ll unravel the provisional cast on edge and knit the live stitches together with the ones on your needle. This might sound more scary than it is! It is a bit fiddly, but you can manage! This might be the most difficult part in the entire pattern and it is not THAT difficult really!

Upper body

Change to larger needles and continue with knitting the upper part of the body and sleeves.

The Lento sweater is a raglan-shaped design. The raglan is probably one of the most basic sweater constructions out there. According to Wikipedia Raglan got it’s name after Baron Raglan, who developed or wore this kind of sleeve construction after he lost his arm in the battle of Waterloo.

Now the pattern tells you to place markers. This is how you mark the places where to make increases. Onto 4 places on your needles.

The Lento sweater utilizes short rows to raise the back of the neck. After working in the round, for short rows you’ll be working flat, (back and forth). You will also be making the raglan increases on the knit rows. Once the short rows are done, you’ll continue to work in the round with the raglan increases.

The raglan increases stay in the same place all the time. Do not move or remove the stitchmarkers unless instructed otherwise!

Follow the pattern and knit the upper part accordingly. Next we will divide sts for the body and sleeves.
