As summer waned, thoughts at Titityy yarn shop turned to fall and the exciting knitting events ahead. In addition to our regular courses, we wanted to host a cozy knitting evening this fall, one filled with togetherness and creativity. Titityy’s Kati took charge of organizing the event, and thus Lankakaupan Yö ("Night at Yarn Shop") was born—a warm, welcoming evening open to all, focused on connecting with fellow knitters, relaxing, and simply enjoying knitting.
Scheduled for a crisp October Friday evening, tickets for Lankakaupan Yö sold out quickly. Nearly 30 knitters joined us, traveling from Jyväskylä and beyond. As they arrived, everyone found their own comfortable spot in the Titityy store, settled in, and pulled out their knitting. The space buzzed with conversation and laughter as attendees explored Titityy’s yarn selection and got to know each other.
During the evening, participants had the opportunity to create their own stitch markers as keepsakes from the event. As a surprise, we also unveiled a brand-new hand-dyed merino sock yarn by Kettu Yarns, which was met with great excitement. Later, everyone gathered to enjoy a delicious supper prepared by Valkoinen Puu, the café located beneath the shop—a meal so delightful it earned plenty of praise.
A highlight of the night was the “word wall,” where knitters could answer the question: “Why do you knit?” Bright yellow Post-it notes began to fill the wall at the shop entrance, forming a beautiful word cloud of reasons that celebrated the joy of knitting.
The knitting evening was an overwhelming success. Kati spent the night mingling with attendees and was met with glowing feedback. The atmosphere was warm and inclusive, and everyone, regardless of whether they came alone or with friends, felt welcome.
“One moment that really stuck with me,” Kati shared, “was a conversation with someone attending this kind of event for the first time. They said they were moved by how safe and warm the atmosphere felt. Even though they only knew one person, they felt like they belonged.”
As the clock struck midnight, many knitters headed home, already looking forward to the next Lankakaupan Yö. And there will certainly be another one! Kati, who loves organizing small events, is already eager to take the reins again.
“At Titityy, we’re committed to fostering and supporting knitting and craft culture in Finland. It’s important for knitters to have opportunities to meet in relaxed, open, and welcoming spaces.”
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us and made Lankakaupan Yö such a success! We look forward to continuing to create opportunities for knitters to connect, discover new yarns, materials, and tools, and share their love of the craft.
